The trio of Aarya Babbar, Harish and Yuvraj Hans were the anchors, who held the reins of the movie firmly in their hands, though Aarya Babbar did falter in that frequently in the movie. It was Harish, who took the cake with his hilarious acts. His comedy was so spontaneous, natural and refreshing that never at any point in the film the viewer feels anything imposed in his character. The storyline was simple and plot developed on the expected lines. But this cannot be taken to be a weak point of the film as in case of comedies it is not the story that is of utmost importance, rather it is the comic dialogues and acts, and also the character portrayal. For a change, the comedy in the movie was not created out of stale jokes and the SMS’s as has been the case with most of the Punjabi films recently.

There are a few flaws that need to be discussed in this film review of 'Yaar Anmulle'. They could have very well been avoided. First, the location of the movie was shifted back and forth from Punjabi University, Patiala to Lovely Professional University, Phagwara. The logo of the Lovely Professional University was shown whenever there was a classroom scene. Had the logo not been there, the classroom could have been passed off as that of the Punjabi University, Patiala. Secondly, the fowl Punjabi language used by Harish to create humour should not have been used. The director probably wanted to give it a realistic touch and also endear it to the Punjabi youth, who often indulge in such indecent language. But by using such language to create humour the director seemed to be justifying its usage. At no cost this message should be given by a movie of a high stature.

Aarya Babbar and Jividha in 'Yaar Anmulle'

Some critics have pointed out that there is no moral message in the movie. First of all, I would like to mention it here that if there is no moral message in the movie that should not be considered as a negative point of the movie. Not all the films preach morality. Some are for pure entertainment purpose, with the only thing kept in mind that no immoral act is promoted. And that would be preaching morality in some sense! One thing definitely lacking in the movie ‘Yaar Anmulle’ is that there are many scenes in the film that focus on ragging in the University but there is no message against this issue. Now the second point is that the statement that there is no moral message in the movie is not wholly true. There are certain messages. One such instance is when it is particularly emphasized by Jividha that if Aarya Babbar has not been to clear his exams it is not that he is not intelligent. This is a very common mindset of people in Indian society, which leads to a tragic setback to the Indian education system and also the neglect of talented children. There are many children, who might not be very intelligent in academics but have a hidden talent in them just as Aarya Babbar has the knack of writing beautiful poetry. Hence, film 'Yaar Anmulle' has a very serious message to convey. It should serve as an eye-opener for the society, especially the parents, who are always into pressurizing their children to score well in academics.

Kajal (first from left), Yuvraj Hans (second from right) and Aarya Babbar (extreme right)

The cinematographer too deserves credit for his outstanding work. The heroines didn’t have much to do in the movie. It was just like any other Punjabi movie. But there are a few things in which this one stands out inspite of its simple story line. For instance, the ragging scene in the beginning of the movie didn’t appear to be a stereotype (as was the case with the ragging scene in ‘Yaara O Dildaara’.

Overall, the movie was very good and not just a one-time watch.

Movie Review: Yaara O Dildara

Amritbir Kaur
New Delhi
amritbir80@gmail.com

Movie
Yaara O Dildaara

Producer/s
Bhushan Kumar
Kishan Kumar

Director
Ksshitij Chaudhary

Star Cast
Harbhajan Maan...... Harleen
Neena Cheema
Sunita Dheer

Cassettes and CD's on
T-Series

Movie Review: ‘Yaara O Dildaara’

‘Yaara O Dildaara’ was a usual entertainer with all the already-established formulae of a masala movie. The stage is set in the initial part of the film when the mention is made of Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan), who is returning home after winning the Businessman of the Year award. Also another actor, who enters into this scene, is his younger brother Rajbir (Gulzar Inder Chahal).

Gurpreet Ghuggi’s light-hearted, natural and spontaneous comedy added a starry touch to the movie. The library scene is a bit too exaggerated with the students directly challenging the librarian of the college, Gurpreet Ghuggi.

The first appearance of Rajbir (Gulzar Inder Chahal) in the college is the fight scene between him and his seniors, who were indulging in ragging of students including Harleen (Jonita Doda). The ragging scene in the beginning of the movie was such a stereotype scene that the viewer feels as if he is watching just any other movie. There is an abrupt change in the scene from college to a happening party and the song ‘Happy hai ji’ that marks the entry of Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan) in the movie ‘Yaar O Dildaara’. An attempt to churn out a peppy number with ‘Happy hai ji’ didn’t turn out to be an excellent one. The product was just an average song with the not-so-appealing lyrics.

Sudden display of interest of Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan) in Harleen (Jonita Doda) seems a bit too hurriedly inserted into the storyline. Another indication of the moving turning into a love-triangle between Rajbir (Gulzar Inder Chahal) , Harleen (Jonita Doda) and Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan).

We can say that Harbhajan Maan is at his best in this movie but he is still very far away from being called a fine actor. His dialogue delivery is neither spontaneous nor natural.

The film bears a close resemblance to ‘Dillagi’, the story of two brothers with the elder one not too much in favour of marriage and only interested in the success of his business. But his family is weaving dreams of marrying him (Sukhdeep, that is, Harbhajan Maan) to Harleen (Jonita Doda). Even the girl’s father is interested in marrying his daughter to the elder of the two brothers.

An element of suspense is added to the story with Harbhajan’s mention of having spent five years alone and that there is a specific reason why he is not interested in marriage. This is where Aman(Tulip Joshi) enters into the scene. Harbhajan Maan is at first lost in distant memories and bursts out into a few sad lines just before a romantic song ‘Haal oye rabba’, in which he reminisces about romancing Aman (Tulip Joshi). From then on starts the story within the main story of the movie.

I think it is better to be silent about the part when Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan) tries to find the girl Aman(Tulip Joshi) by searching the name Amandeep Kaur from the telephone directory of Chandigarh city. Their love blossoms and talks of their marriage are on the track. And then the twist! There is a hint at shady background of their families. After Karam Singh Sandhu’s (Kabir Bedi) efforts it is revealed that Aman (Tulip Joshi) is born not out of the wedlock of her parents. Her father died before he could be married to his then fiancée, that is, Aman’s mother. Then pursues an emotional drama between father and son, grandmother and Sukhdeep and finally between the two lovers, Sukhdeep and Aman. They don’t marry after all.

After this background story, the movie once again comes back to the present with Sukhdeep standing on the terrace of his house, where he was recalling all these events. The story goes on as expected. As arrangements are being made to get Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan) married with Harleen(Jonita Doda), Sukhdeep has an inkling that all is not well. Finally he discovers that his younger brother Rajbir(Gulzar Inder Chahal) and Harleen are in love with each other and are sacrificing just for his happiness. The love story of Gurpreet Ghuggi is the sub-plot in the movie that adds a touch of humour and light-hearted comedy. The issue is resolved in a comic manner.

After this reunion any viewer would expect some consolation for Sukhdeep (Harbhajan Maan) too. By turn of events he comes face to face with Aman (Tulip Joshi). But she doesn’t agree on marrying Sukhdeep. She doesn’t relent even when the whole family including Sukhdeep’s father ask her to agree. She still insists on leaving for Canada. The whole scene at the airport was a bit too stretched one. The reunion of Sukhdeep and Aman was unduly stretched as if just trying to add a twist and may be to arouse suspense in the minds of the viewers, which I regret to say was not aroused. The storyline of the movie ‘Yaar O Dildaara’ was too expected and run of the mill kind. One could not help drawing too over-bearing a resemblance to the Bobby Deol, Urmila and Sunny Deol starrer Hindi movie ‘Dillagi’.

Overall the film does not reach anywhere the standard set by ‘Jihne Mera Dil Luteya’. It was just an average kind. Harbhajan Maan has still a long way to go till he is established as a good actor. The two female lead actors of the movie Jonita Doda and Tulip Joshi did not have very meaty roles. I don't think they did justice to their roles because rather than contributing substantially to the movie their presence was important for the addition of romantic angle. To sum up, I have to say that the movie is just an average one.

Punjabi Movie Review: Jihne Mera Dil Luteya

Amritbir Kaur
New Delhi
amritbir80@gmail.com

Movie: JIHNE MERA DIL LUTEYA
Year of Release: 2011
Director: MANDEEP KUMAR
Story, Screenplay & Dialogues: DHEERAJ RATTAN
Produced by: BATRA SHOWBIZ PVT. Yuvraj and Gurnoor are the sons of two wealthy landlords, who are daggers drawn towards each other although they were very close friends earlier. After years of not even on talking terms, Yuvraj and Gurnoor are united after they are into wooing Noor, while she is totally against marriage. So Yuvraj and Gurnoor unite for a common cause, that is, converting Noor's opinion in favour of marriage. The movie is a love-triangle with an addition of another angle when another suitor comes to marry Noor. He is Karanveer (played by Binnu Dhillon).

Film Review: JIHNE MERA DIL LUTEYA

The movie with the usual love-triangle Bollywood masala is definitely an interesting watch. The movie Jihne Mera Dil Luteya has enough to capture the audience's attention inspite of the typically drawn story-line. What adds magic to this Bollywood style masala is the refreshing humour and the spontaneous and natural comedy done by the actors in the movie. Binnu Dhillon, no doubt, deserves special accolades for playing an idiotic role so brilliantly. It is only an intelligent actor, who can do justice to a not-so intelligent role. It is not everyone's cup of tea.

Many of the dialogues from the movie 'Jihne Mera Dil Luteya' are so infectious they became an instant hit with the viewers. The leading actors in the movie, Diljit Dosanjh, Gippy Grewal and Neeru Bajwa, fitted very well into their roles. Neeru Bajwa is a seasoned actor by now and has carved out a niche for herself in the Punjabi film industry. When we take the case of the two singer turned actors, Diljit and Gippy, we can very easily see that they are not at all misfit into their characters. They did full justice to their characters. Diljit has definitely set a new standard of acting in Punjabi movies. Read more about Diljit: 'Diljit has definitely arrived'

The story is well-scripted with apparently almost no loose ends. This is a feat occasionally achieved with a typically common story. With a gripping screenplay, the movie nowhere loses its pace; it is neither racy nor very slow, just the right to maintain the viewer's gripping attention. The suspense was also maintained in a perfect manner with no slip-slops.

Overall, the movie is a must watch for all those who enjoy and promote Punjabi cinema; for all those who have followed the growth of Punjabi cinema and want to see where it has arrived with 'Jihne Mera Dil Luteya' and for all Punjabis and who understand Punjabi language.

Desi Munde

Banner
VIP Films USA
Purewal Films

Status
Shooting on

Color
C

Release Date
October 2011

Language
Punjabi

Genre
Drama

Producer
Gurjit K. A lot of entertainment comes from cheap glamour and the not so real action. But a good story, which gives a simple message again far from reality. It does not add any milestone in Punjabi cinema, and is just a one-time watch, but it may establish Diljit as an actor because he has delivered his best.

Story starts with action scene full of suspense, when illiterate Avtar (Diljit) fights with his village friends to stop them from blasting a factory producing hazardous chemicals that were polluting the only drinking water source. By stopping them he becomes a hero and a victim at the same time. He is appointed as the leader of the team that will go to the state capital (Chandigarh) to meet the minister from their constituency and tell him about the situation. They will carry an application through which villagers has requested the minister to shut down the erring factory to save lives of his own people who have voted for him to make him win and be a minister. Diljit’s childhood friend Simran (Pooja Tondon), with whom he keeps quarrelling all the time loves him by heart and her brother (Gurpreet Ghuggi) accompanies him. In the city he gets in to the trap of local gunda Babbar and allies. There he meets glamorous Jassi (Jividha) and falls in love with her. Occurrences of odd incidents unfold the reality and force him to fight with the system to complete his noble mission. It reminds me of Sunny Deol’s Ghatak. In this high drama bollywood flick, innocent villager Sunny Deol comes to city for the treatment of his father Amrish Puri and gets trapped in the net of local Gundas. Then he fights for the self respect of bauji and wins at last. Similarly, in this film it is Diljit, who comes for the treatment of the problems of his village and gets trapped in the web of politician-gangster nexus.

Diljit has done a commendable job in his debutant movie. He has delivered the dialogues with ease and looks confident in front of camera. He is equally confident in action, comic, emotional and romantic scenes. Pooja Tondon fails to express the feelings of a village girl. She has no command over language except in the last emotional scene, when she expresses her love. On the contrary, Jividha looks more confident even in her odd costumes. Her dialogue delivery is just passable. Deep Dhillon is again top notch in his evil politician’s character. After playing many noble man characters in his previous ventures, Dhillon had played a negative character after such a long time. He gets into the shoes of Balwant Rai and provokes us to hate him infinitely. Yaad Grewal also fits into the gangster’s character and gives his best expression to scare common man. Vindu Dara Singh is a surprise package in the film. Director has cashed his mad man’s image established during Big Boss. He justifies his role and fits well into the role of inspector Balbir Singh. Guggi again excels in his comic character but does not flourish fully compared to his previous performances. Bhotu shah, in his pet bihari character, enters with cracking jokes but finally becomes monotonous and fails to please the audience. Vivek Shouk perfectly enacts a small but memorable role. Other supporting actors also suit in their roles.

LoP is the kind of story, which can be made in any Indian language. It will naturally be related to region of that language without any extra effort. It seems to be more of a bollywood flick instead of original Punjabi film. It talks about politician-industrialists nexus that promotes corruption and pollution in India Including Punjab. This corrupt system becomes the cause of threat for the lives of common men. Guddu Dhanoa handles the story in his popular manner and succeeds in exploiting maximum from his actors, but fails to command the right language at many places. There are many blunders in the film, but major is one when in the pre-climax scene after ramming into the police barricade Diljit opens the back door of the ambulance and cops open fire. How can it be possible that only politician Babbar got shot leaving other passengers unharmed? Though Diljit pushes Babbar in front of the bullets but others were also openly exposed to guns. Were others wearing bullet proof jackets or were the cops targeting Babbar only. Secondly, to put masala in the film Guddu used all the cheap glamorous scenes, which look vulgar and forced.

Music miserably fails and has no concern with the story at all. All the songs are patched forcibly and add the unnecessary length to screenplay except the title song. Only ‘Lakk 28’ song raises the expectations due to its beats, but fails to fulfill them on screen due to forced penetration. All the lyrics are meaningless and add no worth to music. In the effort to make popular music and lyrics Anand Raj Anand failed to pull the audience to the ticket window. Music has played a negative role in the promotion of LoP.

Santosh Dhanoa’s story is good but Sanyanshu Gupta’s screenplay is faulty and drags at places. It could be edited to cut the length. Art and locations are pathetic. Cinematography is just okay and needs more sharpness and clarity. Ram Shetty’s action is up to mark though it looks artificial at places. Choreography is also stereotype, though Diljit danced well in few shots. Dialogues are good enough, but a little more effort could have made them memorable.

Final word, LoP is simply another bollywood masala film, which tries to touch issues related to Punjab, but fails to give a practical solution. It shows and promotes violence and vulgarity for the sake of entertainment. All these features make it a one time show. Watch it if you are a die-hard fan of Diljit and his panga style. Avoid it if you want sensible entertainment.

DHARTI

DHARTI-CAST AND CREW

Banner
Best Films corp
JSP Filmworks

Status
Shooting going on

Color
C

Release Date

Language
Punjabi/Hindi

Genre

Shooting Locations
Chandigarh, Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab

Producer
Jimmy Shergill
Dhrashan Singh Grewal
I. padding-right: 10px; padding-top: 5px; width: 131px;">Flawless screenplay, fresh story, brain hammering twists and turns and up to the mark acting – these are the keywords that sum up the film ‘Chana Sachi Muchi’ in a few words. As soon as a question arises in your mind, the director speaks through his characters and puts to rest every query. Climax is the out of box idea and shows the capability of director who himself is the writer. Though Goldy Sumal is holding the film on his shoulders, but if I say the real hero is Harinder Gill (Director/Writer), I will not be over rating him. He knows well how to keep under control the story, characters and the actors. After a long span of time, a Punjabi movie has been produced, which I strongly recommend as a must-watch for every age group. Wait a minute, if you are thinking that there are no flaws, then read till the end!

First the positive ones, the biggest assets of the film are its strong screenplay and story. Ace writer and director Harinder Gill has addressed the social menace in well- knit plot with entertainment coated eye candy story. Film starts with the high action drama. Goldy Sumal’s entry is remarkable. Action packed beginning makes the heart beat faster and the audience sticks to its seats. Now enters the fun loving Sukh (Miss Pooja). She soothes with her charm and nasty acts in her college and home. In the first half, pace is so breath taking that you feel yourself flowing with the story. Sometimes a question comes in mind, isn’t it happening so fast and illogically? But believe me it is close to the reality and makes the audience fall in line with the story. Jas Dhillon’s presence and his expressions make the tension more intense.

Now the first flaw, voice over on Jas’s dialogues (which resembles to veteran actor and well known villain of Pollywood Deep Dhillon) does not suit appropriately on him. In the beginning when you listen to him you exclaim like “Dum hai munde di awaaz ch”, but when you realize that it is someone else's voice, you fall back. Actually it has not been gelled wisely with Jas. Sometimes it goes much louder and irritates. Jas, with his strong expressions overpowers this shortcoming. Rana Ranbir’s sub-plot with comic appeal compliments the story. Not only it gives amusing moments during tense situation, but also enhances the impact of the main plot. Many scenes are commendable and memorable. The scene when Pooja first time argues with Barey Bey Ji (Aneeta Sabdeesh) and the scene when Goldy encounters Aneeta are outstanding. Even the dailougues in these scenes are remarkable, especially ‘Na main mirza…’

The climax is quite powerful. When Pooja takes law in her hands, firstly we think that why did she have to do that when law was working appropriately, but as soon as this question flashes in the mind of audience, director through Sukh speaks aloud about the rotten system. This makes the film most sensible and worth watching. In the scene when Goldy pulls baba’s chappal and beats him, director hammers the sharpest nail in the coffin of ‘Derawaad’ issue of Punjab and preaches to the public to choose the right path.

On the terms of acting, Goldy has again proved that he can get into skin of his character very well. He portrays every required emotion, from aggression, love and grief to cruelty. But that is not enough; he has to work hard on his body language and improve upon his facial expressions as well. Pooja also appropriately grasped her character and gave her best effort to live upto the demands of the character of Sukh on screen. Again this credit goes to writer/director because he has penned her character according to her capabilities and exploited these capabilities with his directorial skills. Still she has to work very hard to establish herself as an actress. Jas Dhillon has given his best shot as Nishan. As a crooked brother he plays his character well and leads the nexus of drug peddler, saint and politician appropriately. Rana Ranbir’s character seems to be written for him especially and he fits well into it. A fat guy in the character of Halwayee (the cook/sweet seller) has also done a commendable job. Character played by his wife is also funny and entertaining. Girl playing the character of Jashan has nothing much to do. Final culmination of both the plots strikes the human chords.

Cinematography is of top notch quality. Music almost fits well with the development of the story, but song ‘sharabiya’ has been forcibly patched into the story. It could be avoided. Some scenes need to be elaborated more. Costumes in the first half are much brighter. Goldy looks much better in second half. Editing is also appropriate.

Final verdict: a story based on social issues, presented in entertaining package. A must watch for every school & college going youngster, the elderly and women. Watch it for Goldy Sumal and Harinder Gill’s tremendous work, but if you really hate Miss Pooja and can’t bear her film’s success you can stay back.

‘Chak Jawana’ : Just Lesson, No Entertainment

Review By-Deep Jagdeep Singh English Translation By-Amritbir Kaur

The story of the movie ‘Chak Jawana’ seems to have been lost somewhere amidst superb acting, soulful music and a meaningful message. The much awaited film of Gurdas Maan could not live up to the expectations of the public. The film was unable to make an effective appeal to the audience because of the poor screenplay. The story of the film revolves around the psychology of the drug addicts, the pitiable situation of their parents and the addicts’ attitude towards society in general. The film throws light on the valid and logical suggestions that can put to effect for solving these issues.

The film is based on a simple and straightforward story line. Gurjit Singh (Gurdas Maan), who is a Captain in Navy, comes to his village on a leave to relieve his parents of their worries and tensions. There he comes to know that his beloved younger brother, Raja (Gaurav Kakkar) and his friends are confirmed drug addicts, due to which their families have been condemned to utter disgrace and pain. Captain Gurjit, with a serious thought after understanding the psychology of such addicts, adopts a unique way of bringing back such strayed people back to healthy ways of life.

The youth take it as a challenge and are able to overcome their negative urges. The story progresses till this stage and also keeps the audience involved in it to some extent. But when Captain’s team wins the match, it seems as if the film is over. This is because the other issue on which the film is based is not developed well in the first half of the film but it suddenly gains too much importance in the second half.

It also appears as if the writer and director are carrying the story forward just for the sake of giving a moral lesson to the youth. Helping the youth to break free from the vicious circle of drugs, Captain plunges into the field of politics in trying to associate the youth to the social issues. It is because of this drastic step taken by Captain that narrow minded politicians like the Sarpanch (played by Gurkirtan) stand as a prominent obstacle in his path of enlightenment. Captain tastes political success too and thus, gives across a message to the youth through the media at the end of the film.

The strong points of this film are its versatile actors and their powerful acting. Gurdas Maan is very spontaneous in his acting and lives upto the image of his character of the Captain. He has played the role of a responsible elder brother in a very responsible manner. Gaurav Kakkar has added grace and charm to the character of Raja with wonderful acting. Rana Ranbir too has done full justice to the character of an unemployed teacher, Master Jassi. He very aptly depicts the pain of being driven to drugs because of unemployment. In the character of Talli, Pardeep Joshi has poignantly presented the psychological state of a young lad who has been enslaved by drugs. He tends to dominate other characters in many of the scenes in the film and in solitary scenes he leaves a long lasting impression upon the audience. During the election campaign season, there is a scene wherein a conspiracy hatched by the opposition to disrupt Captain’s march into politics the opposition, Talli comes back to take the packet of drugs that was lying on the ground to tempt him after having thrown it away once – this scene is something that stands out in the whole film for the powerful impact exerted upon the audience.

Pardeep’s flawless expressions that bring to life the true reactions of an addict being tempted back again; his act lends deep insights into the psychology of such a person. And in the very next scene he portrays in silence the new found, uncontrolled joy of an addict coming back to drugs. It is because of this spontaneity of his expression that Pardeep has been able to strike a chord with the audience.

Lost in the dreams of going abroad, Dollar Singh (Karamjit Anmol), also brings forth his polished acting skills for playing his character well. Prince K. J. Singh also does well in his role of a simpleton. He seems very near to the character of Shakespearean fool because of his wise words in the scene when he has a tussle with Rana Ranbir. Sonal Minocha had nothing much to contribute. Jonita Doda in the shoes of Captain’s wife also simply acts out with her average performance the part of a woman, who stands by the family in their hours of distress. Gurkirat and Harry Sharan in their negative shade characters are successful in building up tension in the film.

The music and songs of ‘Chak Jawana’ had already mesmerised the audience. Although the songs are fully interwoven into the fabric of the story of the film, yet both the romantic numbers seem to have been inserted with force – though both are sweetly appealing.

As director the film has been a maiden attempt of Simarjeet Singh, which was successful to a larger extent but a lot needs to be done to make the story and plot well-structured and effective. The lack of dramatic twists and turns in the plot and scarce shortage of elements that bind the audience is what proves to be the biggest shortcoming. This is what lent to the film a very plain look. In this way Bali Janjua and Manjit Maan have failed to convert a weak story into a good screenplay; especially the clash of ideas between Captain and the Sarpanch has not been developed well in the first part of the film due to which the film seems to have been stretched unnecessarily. Rajesh Vashisht’s dialogues were strictly okay. Art, editing and action is well suited to the story line.

The film is a must watch if you want to gain an inisight into the right ways of handling the issue of drug addiction through the class apart acting of Gurdas Maan and other polished theatre artists. But if you go with a bent of mind to watch a movie for entertainment then you’ll be disappointed.

I Am Singh

By Deep Jagdeep Singh

'Mel Karade Rabba' is a commercially successful but a socially damaging film.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; moreover, not for any social reform but just to show off their hollow egoistic tendencies, wealth, their hypocritical attitude and to win over the heart of a beautiful girl. In the beginning I would say, MKR is just like any other routine masala Bollywood film made in Punjabi with a tarka of so called Punjabi attitude. The mundeehr (ਮੁੰਡ੍ਹੀਰ-The Gang of Boys) will definitely like the movie, because they prefer this lifestyle and punjabi girls may relate to character of Seerat (Neeru Bajwa) as she depicts their own heartfelt and real emotions.

The story is just an ordinary one and very predictable. Leading male protagonists Rajbir Gill (Jimmy Shergill) and Nihal (Gippy Grewal) are students of the same college. Both have hard feelings against each other. Rajbir wants to dominate Nihaal and vice-versa. But what is the reason of wrangle between them - this question remained unanswered till the end. In the beginning, when Rajbir is beating a guy with hockey, Nihaal comes to his rescue, but neither does he take the injured guy out of Rajbir’s clutches nor even tries to move a step forward to rescue the victim. But he speaks some highly dramatic dialogues to dominate Rajbir and of course to get applause from audience. There are many scenes to which tend to develop a fight between them, but both never clash till the end. Only once do their gang members lock horns. Though this whole quarrel contributes towards the development of the main plot, yet it proves to be illogical. The movie begins with clash and takes a turn to be a love and hate story, when Rajbir has a glimpse of Seerat passing by. Rajbir falls in love with her at first sight while on the other hand; Seerat’s heart is filled with hatred for him. From here the story follows a routine course. Rajbir’s heroic efforts to win Seerat’s heart result in success, but unveiling of his wrong acts becomes an obstacle in the final fruition of their relationship.

Many blunders take the story far from the reality. Seerat is criticizing Rajbir in the scene, when he comes to her house for the first time, while his mother is sitting at her left side chair. It is impossible that a girl is criticizing a son and his mother is listening with ease without any reaction. Seerat, who hates Rajbir and could not even bear his presence, dances on his tunes during the song ‘dil wali kothi’. Amazing!!! In the scene of marriage ceremony family members and guest are already sitting in marriage hall, and Seerat and Nihal enter walking together for their own marriage ceremony and take seat on decorated chairs. It seems all the more funny because Seerat had not even cared to see Nihal’s photograph.

On the acting terms, Jimmy Shergill is again very well into the shoes of Rajbir Gill. He has not only played but lived the character on celluloid. He has potential to be the face of Punjabi Movies. Though he needs to polish his language, but still it is workable. Gippy Grewal as Nihal outshines in the grey character, which culminates into a heroic villain at the end. His dialogue delivery and acting skills proved much better than what was being expected from him - though this being his first movie, there is always a scope of improvement. Small but powerful role justifies his choice of the character for debut, but in future this grey shade tag may stick to him. Neeru Bajwa (Seerat) has improved a lot in both physique and acting skills. Her newly slim shape is an eye candy. She looks matured as an actor in emotional scenes. She portrays the emotion of a ruined beloved, when Rajbir, after the encounter with her father, turns back to hooliganism (though false it was). Only one thing, she should take in consideration is her dress up style. Though she looks nice in western dresses and acceptable as young Punjabi girl in these outfits, but when she wears tops pulled down up to her biceps, it looks deliberate and an awkward act. It seems weirdly offensive when her father had to hold her shoulder in the same scene. She looks fine in Punjabi suits. Comedy and comedians are at top notch. Jaswinder Bhalla excels in his role, especially the scene when he forces Rajbir to get married. The whole laddu sequence is entertaining and well shot. Bhotu Shah-Kake Shah did justice to their characters. Amar Noorie, though her face tells her age (that suits to her character), is tremendous in her character of Rano. Shivinder Mahal (Seerat’s Father) depicts the right attitude of a daughter’s father, in the scene across railway tracks, when he comes face to face with Rajbir. All the other ladies are strictly okay. Diljit is surprise for audience in the last scene. Any comment about his acting skills would be injustice. His sequence at the climax is a stunt for mouth publicity, but scenes like this must be avoided. It was a deliberate act of director/writer and a most destructive one. It turns to be an anti-climax against the moral of the story, which tells us that love can change any one and make him/her responsible person. Even Diljit’s character does not give any justifiable reason for giving up pen and picking up Hockey. It is an anti-youth verdict which inspires the youngsters to choose violence instead of education. Moreover, it insults the educated and peaceful youngsters of Punjab. I must add that it defames the most honored hockey players, who have contributed a lot with the hockey in positive sense.

Director Navniat Singh has put in a lot of hard work to narrate the story on screen. Though at many points various scenes are abrupt and need more elaboration, yet he is successful in giving an up-scale look to a Punjabi film equal to the Bollywood movies. He could have tighter screenplay. His chemistry with the whole team is visible on screen; especially he has established Gippy’s character with an extra effort and special effects. Only the lack of logic between the quarrels of both protagonists is unbearable. Many a times he seems to be in a rush to cut down the length. Cinematography is the real USP for this most predictable film. Harmeet Singh, many times gives the impression of handling camera and direction at the same time. Action is dramatic. Writing part is also commendable. Few dialogues are memorable ones.

Music is the major attraction, which brings audience to the theatre and it is worth listening. Song, punjabi munde, in the very beginning takes the audience on a joyful ride and Atif’s rona chhad ta, takes them to a height of emotion. Song, dil wali kothi gives the charm of romance and fun. Title song, though fits appropriately into the story, but its composition is very fast and that makes it unclear to ears and difficult to understand. Can you get the words sung by Jasbir Jassi ‘tere hath yaar nu milaan wali dor a’ All the music directors have done good job. Gippy’s song (patched at the last moment in the movie few days before release) does not satisfy his fans, because the censored track ‘sher ban ke’ is played when the end credits roll up. It ends as soon as it starts.

Final verdict, Mel Karade Rabba is a routine bollywood style predictable masala movie, which can break records at box office, but could not be remembered in long run. In the name of supporting cinema, we can not take back home destructive thoughts, when youngsters of Punjab are already, under the influence of power play, indulging in quarrels and waiting in the endless queues outside courts.

Watch it for good production quality, Gippy Grewal’s new avatar and essence of love, but avoid if you are going for some sensible cinema.

Rating 2.5/5

Read this Review in Punjabi, Click here

Khushiyan

Title
Khushiyan(ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ)

Banner
Ghaniyan Film Production

Producers
Darshan Garg
D.P.Goyal
Pardeep Bansal
Director
Tarlok Malik

Actor
